Mark Twain Short Stories

My fourth book is a translation of Mark Twain’s short stories. It was released on 7th July 2025 and has been very well received. The Tamil language edition of “The Hindu” newspaper did a favorable review of this book.

I was overjoyed when my publisher entrusted me with the task of translating Mark Twain’s short stories. He had given me complete latitude on which stories I could include in the anthology. That proved to be a herculean task, given the breadth of Twain’s works. With great difficulty, I managed to curate a collection of 14 stories that showcases Twain’s sharp wit, biting sarcasm, and subtle social observations.

Stories Brimming with Humor

One of America’s greatest humorist, Mark Twain is considered the father of American Literature. Blending satire with humor, he had critiqued the contradictions and disingenuity that existed in the American society, earning him wide readership. Consequently, his writings were very well received. With his distinct writing style, he is credited with bringing a unique perspective to American Literature.

This anthology is a collection of 14 stories of Mark Twain’s, drawn from his short stories, novels, travelogues and literary critiques. It is not an easy task to bring humor into writing. Author S. Suresh has managed to do that in his translation with simplicity and charm, making this book read like an original work in Tamil. That is the strength of this book.

One can experience the humor in each of the stories included in this collection, such as, A Medieval Romance, How I Edited an Agricultural Paper, Tom Sawyer Whitewashes the Fence, The Story of a Bad Little Boy, Science vs. Luck, and Two Little Tales. The interesting dialog between a husband and his wife, and the resulting incidents, brings a chuckle or two as one reads the story of Mrs. McWilliams and the Lightning. These stories may have been written more than a century ago, but Mark Twain’s unique writing style still provides a reader with the same charm today as it did back then. The stories included in this anthology provide a wonderful reading experience.
